Cell Signal Booster for a Basement Apartment in Canada (Rogers, Bell, Telus)

Dropped calls in a basement suite? How to test Rogers, Bell, Telus, Freedom or Videotron signal, choose a kit size, plan the install with your landlord, and what ISED requires.

Short answer

Basement suites lose cell signal because the foundation, soil and the floor above absorb it. A booster helps only if there is usable signal outside: an outdoor antenna picks it up and an indoor antenna rebroadcasts it in the suite. Test outside first, try Wi-Fi calling, get the owner's permission for antennas and cables, and check the exact model against ISED's requirements before installing.

Why basement suites have weak signal

Many Canadian homes in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa have a rented basement suite. Below grade, cell signal has to pass through concrete foundation walls, earth and the main floor. Energy-efficient windows and foil-backed insulation, common in colder climates, block even more.

The result is dropped calls, texts that arrive late and slow LTE or 5G data, even when the main floor has good service.

Step 1: test your carrier outside

Turn Wi-Fi off and check your phone on each side of the house and at an upstairs window. Note your carrier (Rogers, Bell, Telus, Freedom Mobile, Videotron or SaskTel, or a flanker brand such as Fido, Virgin Plus, Koodo, Public Mobile or Chatr that uses one of their networks). Make a test call.

Canadian carriers use different bands. Rogers, Bell and Telus mostly use 700, 850, 1900 and AWS 1700/2100 MHz, while Freedom relies heavily on AWS and 600/700 MHz. Pick a kit whose bands match your carrier; our Canada product pages list the bands each kit supports.

Step 2: choose a kit size

A one-bedroom basement suite usually suits a 3,230 sq ft class home kit. A larger suite or a suite plus the main floor may need a 5,380 sq ft class kit. Coverage figures are best-case and depend on the outside signal. Prices in our Canada shop are shown in Canadian dollars (CAD).

Step 3: plan the install with the owner

The outdoor antenna usually mounts on the roof line, a fascia or the side of the house facing the tower, so you will need the homeowner's permission if you rent. A cable then runs to the booster and the indoor antenna in the suite. A window cable or an existing service entry can avoid drilling.

Keep the outdoor and indoor antennas well apart to prevent feedback, and use the shortest cable run that works.

The rules in Canada

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) says only boosters certified for use in Canada may be installed, and some carriers ask you to get their consent. Check the exact model against ISED's requirements and radio equipment list before installing. We make no ISED certification claim for any kit unless the exact model's listing can be shown, and we're happy to help you check.

Cheaper fixes first

Wi-Fi calling is supported by Rogers, Bell, Telus, Freedom and Videotron on most modern phones. If the suite has its own internet or good Wi-Fi from upstairs, turn it on and test calls. A mesh Wi-Fi node in the suite is often enough for calls and texts.

Frequently asked questions

Will a booster work if I have no bars in my basement suite?

Yes, if there is usable signal where the outdoor antenna goes. The outdoor reading matters more than the reading downstairs.

Does a booster work with Freedom Mobile?

Only if the kit supports Freedom's bands, mainly AWS 1700/2100 MHz. Our Universal kits cover AWS; check the band list on each product page.

Can a tenant install a signal booster?

Ask the homeowner first, since the outdoor antenna and cable are fixed to the house. Many installs use a window cable to avoid drilling.

Are signal boosters legal in Canada?

ISED requires boosters installed in Canada to be certified, and some carriers ask for consent. Check the exact model before installing.

What size do I need?

Most basement suites suit a 3,230 sq ft class kit. Send us your floor plan if you are unsure.
