Weak Phone Signal at a Holiday Home, Shack or Caravan in Australia? Your Options
One bar at the beach shack, bush block or on-site caravan? How to test Telstra, Optus and Vodafone coverage, the free fixes, and what ACMA says about boosters and repeaters.
Short answer
Holiday homes, shacks and caravans often sit at the edge of coverage, behind dunes, hills or trees, with metal roofs that block what signal there is. Check each carrier's coverage map, test outside with your phone, and use Wi-Fi calling where you have a satellite or fixed wireless connection. In Australia, ACMA says mobile phone boosters are prohibited, and a repeater may only be used with the written authorisation of the carrier whose network it repeats.
Why holiday properties lose signal
Many holiday homes are in exactly the places mobile networks struggle: behind coastal dunes, in river valleys, at the end of a bush track or in a caravan park in a dip. Distance from the tower weakens the signal, and terrain blocks it. Then the building itself finishes the job. Colorbond roofs, metal-clad shacks and caravan walls act like a shield, so a phone that shows two bars at the car can show none inside.
Holiday periods add another problem. When a small coastal town fills up over summer or Easter, the local tower can become congested, and data slows even where coverage looks fine on the map.
Step 1: test before you spend
Check the Telstra, Optus and Vodafone coverage maps for the exact address, then test on site. Walk around outside with Wi-Fi off, note the bars and whether a call holds, and try the highest point you can reach safely, such as a deck or a ladder at the roofline. Ask neighbours which carrier works best for them.
Remember that budget brands use the big three networks: Boost Mobile runs on Telstra, amaysim on Optus and Felix on Vodafone (TPG Telecom). If one network is clearly stronger at the property, a second SIM or an eSIM on that network can be the simplest fix.
Free and low-cost fixes
If the property has NBN fixed wireless, satellite or Starlink, switch on Wi-Fi calling. It carries calls and texts over the internet connection and works with Telstra, Optus and Vodafone on most current phones. In a caravan, simply parking the van with its door or largest window facing the tower can make a noticeable difference.
For data, a 4G or 5G modem with an external antenna placed where the signal is best can serve the whole house over Wi-Fi.
What ACMA says about boosters and repeaters
ACMA's guidance is clear: mobile phone boosters are prohibited in Australia, and a mobile repeater may only be used with the written authorisation of the carrier whose network it repeats. Carriers offer their own approved options, so ask yours before installing any hardware, and keep any written permission you receive.
We do not claim any kit is approved for use in Australia. If you are unsure what is allowed at your property, contact us before you buy and we will explain the options honestly.
A simple plan for your property
Start with the free steps: check the maps, test on site, and switch on Wi-Fi calling if you have an internet connection. If one carrier is clearly stronger, try a prepaid SIM on that network for a weekend before changing plans. For data, a modem placed at the best spot in the house, or on a mast outside, can share the connection over Wi-Fi to everyone staying.
If you still want a repeater, contact your carrier first, ask about its approved products for your area and get written authorisation before installing anything. Write down the signal readings you took outside, the carrier you use and the size of the building, because that is exactly what a carrier or our advisors will ask for. Holiday homes are often empty for weeks, so choose equipment that can be switched off and left safely, and protect any outdoor antenna and cable from salt air, sun and wildlife.
If you go ahead with hardware
Size the kit for the space you actually use, such as the main living area of the shack or the inside of the van. A 300 m² class kit suits most holiday homes and caravans; larger properties with outbuildings need more. Mount the outdoor antenna as high as possible, pointing towards the tower, and keep it well away from the indoor antenna. Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to use a phone signal booster at my holiday home?
ACMA says mobile phone boosters are prohibited, and a repeater needs the written authorisation of the carrier whose network it repeats. Ask your carrier first.
Which network is best for holiday homes in Australia?
It depends on the location. Telstra has the largest coverage footprint, but check all three maps and test on site before deciding.
Does Wi-Fi calling work with Starlink?
Yes. Wi-Fi calling works over most internet connections, including Starlink, on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone with compatible phones.
Why is signal worse inside my caravan?
Metal walls and roofs block signal. Test outside, then park so the largest window faces the tower.
